I am a big movie buff and am loving the different TV series that are airing on Netflix and Foxtel. TV is not just a relaxing past time for escaping one’s own mad life. But perhaps a portal into self-discovery. With clever narratives and surprisingly profound messages in this 21st-century entertainment industry, screenwriters are pulling these imaginative, creative stories from somewhere higher. Could our imagination be a connection to something bigger than us?
Set in the future, within Westworld theme park, which is designed for human visitors to come to experience the Wild West. The park is occupied by “hosts” which look like humans but are actually robots with advanced programming to follow a set narrative. Their memories are wiped at the end of each day. Sometimes they are reprogrammed for a new narrative. Humans indulge themselves in the park with the hosts through whatever means they wish including sex and simulated murder. Deviations in host behaviour are noticed by the parks staff, due to a technical glitch in memory resulting in an awareness and consciousness.
It’s incredibly complicated and deep. In the last episode of season one, it comes together beautifully. Below is some narration from what I can remember.
Human: “…A divine gift doesn’t come from a higher power but your own mind. Did you find what you were looking for or for what you needed to become if you ever wanted to leave this place? In order to leave this place, you need to suffer. Do you know where you are? “
Host: “I am in a dream, I do not know where it began. I know only I slept a long time and one day I woke. Your voice is the only one I know”.
Human “Who’s voice are you hearing all this time?”
Host: “It was you, talking to me, guiding me, so I followed you, the night I arrived here in the centre of the maze. Now I know I had to confront myself”
Host: “Please erase my painful memories”
Human: “But your painful memories are the way to enlightenment and consciousness. Consciousness isn’t a journey upwards but a journey inwards, not a pyramid but a maze. Every choice could bring you closer to the centre or send you spirally towards the edges into madness. What does the centre represent? Who is the voice have I wanted you to hear?”
Host: “My own”.
This movie deserved more recognition than it received. The story is about a mystery patient at a mental hospital who claims to be an alien in a human body from a planet named K-Pax. His psychiatrist is trying to help him. Yet the so-called alien is having such a positive impact on the other mental health patients, that maybe he is there to help them all. There are lots of messages throughout the movie but the following conclusion was astounding. These are some of the words from Prot the alien from K-Pax.
“The universe will expand then it will collapse back on itself and it will expand again. It will repeat this process forever. What you don’t know is that when the universe expands again, everything will be as it is now. Whatever mistakes you make this time around you will live through on your next past. Every mistake you make you will live through again and again forever. So my advice to you is to get it right this time around because this time is all you have”.
Some other great shows and movies with a deeper spiritual meaning; The Leftovers, Here and Now, Interstellar, Arrival, Tuck Everlasting & Phoebe in Wonderland.
